Arsenal hero Charlie Nicholas has explained why he believes Frank Lampard’s Chelsea will lose to Burnley in the Premier League this weekend.

The Blues travel to Turf Moor on Saturday evening sitting fourth in the English top-flight and having beat Ajax in the Champions League during the week.

Lampard’s side were thumped by Manchester United on the opening weekend of the season but have recovered well to impress both domestically and in Europe.

Nicholas, however, expects the Blues to suffer a defeat on Saturday and says he doubts whether Chelsea will be able to ‘cope’ with Burnley duo Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood. ‘

Chelsea have been more consistent than I thought what with the shift of Frank Lampard coming in and everything that came with it,’ the Arsenal legend told Sky Sports.

‘In essence, it was clear-cut with the transfer situation. If Tammy Abraham scores he stays in the team and for me, Mason Mount is good enough to stay in the side.

‘Callum Hudson-Odoi has signed a new contract and so will feature, Willian is back in good form and Jorginho has been great.

‘Fikayo Tomori is also playing well, but I am not sure whether the Chelsea centre-backs have a partnership to cope with Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood when they get the service that they do.

‘If there is an upset of the weekend then I am looking at this match. The Burnley style may not be attractive to some people but it is so effective. Burnley 2-1 Chelsea.’

The former Chelsea and England midfielder said: ‘I’m delighted with every element of the performance.

‘I think we’re allowed to be excited tonight. That’s the blueprint. There are no excuses for us now. That’s the standard and we can’t drop it.

‘The young players are still babies in terms of Champions League minutes so this was a huge test for them.

‘There was a good balance of young players and experience. We need to realise the things that made that happen tonight because Ajax are a top, top team.’
