BBC pundit Alan Shearer has heaped praise on Chelsea after their 4-1 win against Southampton at St Mary’s this afternoon (Sunday).

Frank Lampard’s Chelsea side ran riot on the south coast, with goals from Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount, N’Golo Kante and Michy Batshuayi helping the Blues to a comfortable win.

But while the former Newcastle United striker was full of praise for Abraham, Mount and Callum Hudson-Odoi, who made his first Premier League start of the campaign, he said there was one senior player who was exceptional against the Saints.

“They are not bad at all. They have three very exciting players, the energy they have, the link up play and of course the understanding, they ran riot all afternoon and they weren’t too far away from each other,” he said, speaking on BBC programme Match of the Day 2.

“What a pass from [Callum] Hudson-Odoi [for the first goal], the run from [Tammy] Abraham, the finish is superb. Mason Mount actually won the header [for the second goal] and what I like about it is he wants to be involved, he doesn’t stand and admire it. Willian was exceptional all afternoon as well.

“The second half didn’t change. They were a threat all afternoon, Abraham and Mount in the full England squad, Hudson-Odoi back from injury and England U21 so it looks very good for them.”

Meanwhile, former Arsenal defender Martin Keown was also full of praise for Willian, as he admitted that the club’s senior players are the ones Chelsea will need to rely on in their quest to reach the top four in the Premier League this season.

“The story now isn’t the young players, the story is the senior players. [Cesar] Azpilicueta has made a few mistakes, Jorginho has been a bit mixed in that midfield, [N’Golo] Kante has been injured,” he said.

“Willian was magnificent today, that’s the good news, because those players are going to give you your fourth place, the consistency, the young players are the icing on the cake.

“So now, it’s a really good time for Chelsea.”
