After coming close to sealing a switch from Lille to Napoli, a member of the forward’s entourage has revealed what convinced him to u-turn in favour of a move to The Emirates.
Reports have suggested Pepe is close to finalising personal terms over a long-term deal, with some discussions over agent fees still being completed to allow the move to take place.
While Napoli had failed to agree personal terms with Pepe, it appears the Serie A outfit were on the cusp of a deal for the winger before Arsenal’s ‘more convincing’ offer.
‘After meeting and discarding several clubs, Nicolas Pepe was able to choose between Naples and Arsenal,’ one of Pepe’s close associates told Ivorian publication Sport Mania (via Metro).
‘I won’t lie to you: a total agreement was almost reached with Napoli.
‘But Arsenal’s offer was more convincing, both financially and in terms of the sporting project.’
Arsenal have so far completed deals for William Saliba, Gabriel Martinelli and Dani Ceballos. Pepe looks set to join the list of new recruits this summer.
